Alpha Protocol Wiki

Graybox is the first mission of Alpha Protocol and the location of the same name, that serves as a character introduction and a tutorial for beginners.

Summary

Michael Thorton has awoken to find himself in a medical bay in a secret government facility. He soon escapes with the help of a newly encountered analyst and begins his journey to unravel the mystery of the situation. Fight your way through the Graybox to uncover where you are and why you were picked for this particular assignment.

Objectives & Walkthrough

Find your Captors

Find out who's responsible for drugging you and bringing you here.

This is the main objective that's given to you when you start the game. To complete it, you have to follow the smaller objectives that will guide you through the area.

Break Out

Break out of the Medical Bay.

After obtaining the PDA left waiting on the nearby table, Michael Thorton will have his first conversation with Mina Tang. This dialogue is the earliest you can obtain 3 specific perks, by selecting the same type of stance twice in a row.

  • Aggressive (Top options): CQC Strike Damage +5
  • Suave (Left options): Reduced Cooldown: All Abilities
  • Professional (Right options): Endurance +5

If you choose two different types of stances here, then you you will get one of those perks slightly later, either in your first conversation with Westridge or even later, with another character. Note that delaying the acquisition of those perks, and choosing Veteran/Recruit stances twice with Westridge will not get their respective special perks, as those are treated separately and need higher response count.

We list the dialogue options as they are displayed in the game going Top-Left-Right-Bottom (Aggressive-Suave-Professional-Special), with the potential reputation changes for the characters following next, when applicable. Empty space next to the option means no reputation change.

  1. Mina Tang - 1st dialogue
    • Aggressive
    • Suave
    • Professional
    Dossier: Mina Tang
Your choice in the second conversation will determine what happens next.
  2. Mina Tang - 2nd dialogue
    • Ambush (Aggressive) - Mina will trigger an alarm, causing the guard (or two guards when playing with Veteran agent history) to enter the Med Bay and giving you a chance to attack.
    • Improvise (Suave) - Michael will tell Mina to stand-by, prompting you to find a way to break the glass. You can then walk over to the fire extinguisher near the door. Interacting with it will prompt Michael to grab the extinguisher and throw it through the window, triggering an alarm.
    • Distraction (Professional) - Mina will shut down the security panel outside, unlocking the door and calling the attention of the guard(s) to the apparent technical malfunction.
    • Ignore - Same as the Improvise option, Michael will break the glass with the fire extinguisher.
The alarm will be triggered right away or, if the Distraction option is chosen, once Thorton deals with guard(s) and enters the next room.
  • XP: +180

Disable Alarms

Bypass the alarm panel to disable the alarm system.

After neutralizing the guard(s) and opening the door to the next room, proceed to the security panel marked by a yellow mission marker near the exit. A man will call over the intercom to taunt Thorton, prompting Michael to bypass the panel to access and disable the alarm systems.

  • XP: +180

Arm Yourself

Find a weapon to defend yourself with.

Two guards occupying the second floor of the atrium can be either neutralized or evaded by sneaking behind their backs, just like all the other guards ahead. A specialized tranquilizer pistol found on the table at the end of the walkway must be picked up to unlock the door to the next area. 12 tranquilizer rounds can also be found nearby next to the computer.

  • XP: +175

Past this area, behind the door is another guard along with 12 tranquilizer rounds for pickup. Down the stairs is a security camera monitoring the next door, which Mina will warn you about. She explains that coming into the camera's line of sight or destroying it will trigger an alarm.

The ground floor, past the door, is patrolled by two guards, who can be neutralized or evaded. There are another 12 tranquilizer rounds in the sub-room to the right.

Pick Lock

Pick the lock to open the door.

Upon entering the next area, a man will appear on the monitor above to further taunt Thorton. Once his announcement ends, you can then pick the lock on the door.

  • XP: +25 - For picking the lock.
  • XP: +150 - For completing the objective.

Evade Guards

Slip through the guards in the tunnel without being detected.

There are 12 tranquilizer rounds on the shelves before entering the next area. After the doors open, Michael automatically takes down a guard, as Mina warns him about a truck entering the area and the guards at the exit. There are another 12 tranquilizer rounds next to the unconscious guard. Down the stairs are three guards. The closest will walk to the ladder leading to the upper catwalks before walking back. Climb the ladder and traverse the catwalk to evade all guards (which offers the best XP reward), or neutralize them and use the stairs to get to the door. Enter the next area, where you'll find another guard and a computer.

  • XP: +250

If you are caught, you fail the optional objective and gain no experience. In case you get detected, two more guards will enter the area, and there will be an extra guard in the next room.

Hack Computer

Hack into the computer to disable the security camera.

The computer marked by an objective marker in this room must be hacked. The room also contains an intel pickup of $2500 in a black briefcase inside a locker monitored by a security camera. This intel unlocks Alpha Protocol's dossier.

  • Dossier: Alpha Protocol
  • XP: +25 - For hacking the computer.
  • XP: +220 - For completing the objective.

Once the computer is hacked, the same man will make another announcement over the intercom again. You can then enter the room to the left and go into the interrogation room.

  • XP: +1300

Conversation with Yancy Westridge

The screen wall inside turns into a video conference with Yancy Westridge, whose dossier is immediately unlocked.

This conversation is the first opportunity to gain or lose reputation with a character. It is also the first opportunity to gain the perk Testing the Waters (for using three different dialogue stances in one conversation). You can also start contributing towards such perks as Green (+2 AP for using Recruit dialogue option 3 times total) and Rookie Move (+8 AP for using Recruit dialogue option 10 times total) if you have Recruit agent history, or Veteran Attitude (+500 XP for using Veteran dialogue option 10 times total) if you have Veteran agent history. There is a total of 10 chances to select a Recruit or Veteran option in Graybox, more so than in any other mission, so it is advisable to pick those special class options each time they appear, because there are no more Recruit dialogue options and only 3 Veteran options to be found throughout the rest of the game.

Also, Graybox is a perfect place to earn the One-Track Mind perk (+5% damage resistance), which requires you to choose the same type of stance (either Aggressive, Suave or Professional) 30 times in a row across several conversations (simple "Yes or No" answers don't count). This mission is packed with lengthy conversations with very minor consequences, that mostly affect your reputation with NPCs. There are 41 dialogue options in Graybox that allow you to pick responses that would qualify for One-Track Mind. The good news is that picking a Recruit or Veteran or any other special bottom stance does not interrupt the One-Track Mind streak, so you should be able to get either of these at the same time. Choosing all 10 Recruit/Veteran options in Graybox leaves you with 31 dialogue options, which is just enough to unlock the perk. The best stance for this is Professional, since all NPCs in Graybox react either neutrally or positively to it. Trying to get it after Graybox is not recommended, as some of the conversations may give worse results when not taken seriously. Also, keep in mind that those 30 responses will greatly shift Thorton's personality preference, which can affect certain events, such as killing Conrad Marburg in Rome (which requires you to choose Suave stance more often than other two types as one condition).

  1. Yancy Westridge – 1st dialogue
    • Defiant
    • Dismissive
    • Loyal
    • Recruit (Special 4th option for Recruit agent history)
    • -OR-
    • Veteran (Special 4th option for Veteran agent history)
  2. Yancy Westridge – 2nd dialogue
    • Impatient - Reputation with Westridge changes by +1
    • Sarcastic - Reputation with Westridge changes by -1
    • Ready
    • Recruit
    • -OR-
    • Veteran
  3. Yancy Westridge – 3rd dialogue
    • Mission
    • Sarcastic
    • Ready
  • Dossier: Yancy Westridge
  • Dossier: Alpha Protocol

After the conversation with Westridge, the mission continues. You get the first level up, gaining 10 AP Points. Proceed further into the facility.

Report to Training Sector

Report to the training sector for advanced training.

Proceed to the training area for advanced training. Complete the Technical Gadgets, Weapons and Espionage Ops orientations and return to Westridge for the interrogation. Note that the orientation training is optional: you can return to the interrogation room immediately after completing this objective, if you want to skip it — although you will miss out on a lot XP rewards and reputation.

  • XP: +50

Change Appearance

Use the locker to change your appearance.

When you enter the training sector, Westridge will suggest you change into the proper gear. The locker seen upon entry will be marked with an objective marker. Here you can change Thorton's appearance. His apparel will also automatically change from the starting hospital scrubs to a suit of armor corresponding to the agent history, or the Casual Attire with the Recruit agent history. This objective is optional, and remains available until the final objective is completed. It is advisable to wait until after completing Alan Parker's Bonus Challenge to change into armor, as stealth can be a concern when playing as Soldier or Veteran. The starting Interceptor Body Armor for these classes generates a lot noise, even when crouched, which will make Parker's challenge difficult, but not impossible.

  • XP: +25

Perk News Conscious can be gained by listening to the entire TV broadcast in the locker room.

Hacking the computer (+25 XP) in the the room will reveal emails about your character and some background chatter on other characters. One of the emails from Westridge will change depending on your agent history.

Orientation Tests

Each orientation test presents the chance to gain or lose reputation with agency's personnel. This starts the options of pursuing the perks Antisocial, for gaining a negative reputation (-3 or less) with three different people, or Social Butterfly, for gaining a positive reputation (+3 or more) with three different people.

Gadget Orientation

The room to the left of the corridor is the Technical Gadget orientation. Inside Thorton will meet Alpha Protocol tech specialist Sean Darcy. Darcy's dossier is automatically unlocked upon first time meeting him. Darcy's dialogue will change slightly if you've already encountered him during Mina's challenge.

  1. Sean Darcy – 1st dialogue / If Mina's bonus challenge has not been completed
    • Threaten – Darcy -1
    • Suave – Darcy +1
    • Professional
    • Recruit – Darcy +1
    • -OR-
    • Veteran – Darcy -1
  2. Sean Darcy - 1st dialogue / If Mina's bonus challenge was completed
    • Threaten
    • Suave
    • Professional
    • Veteran - Darcy -1
  3. Sean Darcy – 2nd dialogue
    • Impatient
    • Casual
    • Professional
  • Dossier: Sean Darcy
Gear Up

You start in the training area where you are instructed to get the grenades from the locker.

The perk Perfect Pitch (+100 XP), which requires throwing 50 gadgets or grenades with a precision aim (i.e. by using the preview arc) can be easily gained in the first training area before the timed challenge starts, as the grenades are unlimited during the test and using them won't affect your score.

Basic Grenade Handling

Three cardboard targets must be destroyed with the grenades. You can also destroy the camera in the room above to get a humorous comment from Darcy.

Advanced Grenade Orientation

Throw three grenades with a ricochet, through a window and below the fuel tank of the truck.

Bypass Electronic Lock

Switch to EMP Charge and throw it at the door lock. If you miss, the grenade can be replenished at the locker.

Plant Explosives

You arrive at a new area where you get a new gadget: Shock Trap. Plant it on the door by walking closer to it and then pressing and holding the gadget button.

Defend Yourself

After the first guard is dispatched, the gate to a large training area will open, with three guards waiting behind another gate. You can plant up to 5 traps near the gate, then hide behind a pillar and wait for the guards to trigger them. Hitting multiple targets with a single trap will earn some extra points. You can also fight the guards in CQC, or go into cover near the grenade locker and subdue them one-by-one with melee takedowns, if that's more your style. When you are done with this challenge, you can place up to 5 traps around the area to make the next challenge easier before leaving through the door. If a score above 100 points is obtained, Darcy will offer you a bonus challenge.

  1. Sean Darcy – 1st dialogue
    • No thanks
    • Run the course again
  2. Sean Darcy – 2nd dialogue / If a score above 100 points is obtained
    • No – Ends test.
    • Yes – Leads to an offer and the third dialogue.
  3. Sean Darcy – 3rd dialogue
    • Refuse – Challenge declined.
    • Agree – Perk Acquired: Betting Man.
  4. Sean Darcy – 4th dialogue / If challenge is declined
    • Bored
    • Sarcastic
    • Professional

Darcy's Bonus Challenge

Disable Technical Ops Alarms.

Disable all three alarms as they are triggered while surviving the waves of guards. Use gadgets and other means to neutralize them as they appear. You can disable the alarms manually or use Radio Mimics three times in a row. No matter how much Thorton is injured, it is impossible to fail here, as the health bar cannot go below 1 during this challenge.

  • Money: $20,000
  • XP: +150

Marksmanship Orientation

The middle room in the corridor is the Marksmanship Orientation. Once you enter, Michael will meet Mina Tang in person for the first time.

  1. Mina Tang - 1st dialogue
    • Tina? - Mina -1
    • Maria? - Mina -1
    • Mina? - Mina +1
    • Mina Tang (only with Veteran agent history) - No reputation change (also doesn't count as a Veteran response for the perk)
  2. Mina Tang - 2nd dialogue
    • Challenging - Mina -1
    • Suggestive - Mina -1
    • Professional
    • Recruit - Mina +1
    • -OR-
    • Veteran - Mina +1
Basic Weapon Handling

You first start with a pistol and submachine guns tutorials.

Tactical Orientation

After the first part is completed, Mina will unlock the gate to the Tactical range and the timed part of the test will begin. The test favors critical hits over the time bonus, so take your time to line up the shots. First is the moving target training with a pistol. Next is the shotgun training, where you can earn some extra points by hitting two targets with a single shot. The submachine gun training follows after. The last is the assault rifle training, where you can score multiple critical hits on each target with the rifle's triple burst, as long as you wait for the reticle to fully settle and turn red. Once you're done, exit the range by climbing the ladder and return to Mina for the results.

  1. Mina Tang - 1st dialogue
    • Contempt
    • Sarcastic
    • Professional
    • Recruit
    • -OR-
    • Veteran - Mina +1
  2. Mina Tang - 2nd dialogue
Dossier: Sean Darcy / Only if this is your first encounter with Darcy
    • Darcy's Score?
    • Affections? - Mina +1
    • My Score
    • Recruit
    • -OR-
    • Veteran - Mina +1
You will get your results here. The only way to reach a high score is to get plenty of critical hits. Earning a negative score by taking extra time (4+ minutes) and having low accuracy will result in a special dialogue from Mina and later from Westridge, if you fail to improve on it. If a score higher than 100 points is reached on the test, Mina will offer a bonus challenge.
  3. Mina Tang - 3rd dialogue
    • No Thanks - Exit Orientation.
    • Run Course Again - Repeat Orientation.
  4. Mina Tang - 4th dialogue / If a score higher then 100 points is obtained
    • Refuse - Challenge declined.
    • Agree - Perk Acquired: Cage Match.

Mina's Bonus Challenge

Teach Darcy some humility the old-fashioned way.

The pistol is reequipped and loaded with tranquilizer ammunition. Climb to ladder and locate Sean Darcy, who is conducting the target practice below. Shoot Darcy to complete the challenge.

A number of opportunities are available during this challenge:

  • At the end of the catwalk, there is an infinitely respawning supply of tranquilizer rounds for the pistol. This supply take several seconds to respawn after each pickup, allowing to obtain as many rounds as desired. Since these rounds are rare and very expensive, it can be a good idea to collect them here for future use.
  • There is a chance to use an exploit to gain the perks Pistol Proficiency (50 critical hits with a pistol) and Pistol Mastery (100 critical hits with a pistol). Darcy's unconscious body can be targeted and hit with critical shots repeatedly, even after he is rendered unconscious, with no ill effect.

Result:

  • Cage Match Perk: 5% Weaponry Discount from Saudi vendors
  • Basic silencer for pistols
  • +1 reputation with Mina Tang
  • Dossier: Mina Tang
  • XP: +150

Espionage Orientation

The room to the right of the corridor is the Espionage Orientation. Once the you enter, Michael will meet Alpha Protocol expert analyst Alan Parker. Parker's dossier is unlocked once he is met.

    • Aggressive - Parker -1
    • Suave - Parker -1
    • Professional
    • Recruit
    • -OR-
    • Veteran - Parker +1
  2. Alan Parker - 2nd dialogue
    • Angry - Parker +1
    • Nonchalant - Parker -1
    • Professional - Parker +1
    • Recruit
    • -OR-
    • Veteran
  3. Alan Parker - 3rd dialogue
    • Irritated
    • No Problem - Parker -1
    • Professional
  • Dossier: Alan Parker
Covert Ops Orientation

Complete the timed Covert Ops obstacle course under Parker's instruction.

Start by climbing the ladder near and hacking the computer. After, enter a room with security cameras, then jump down and lockpick the door. In the next room, crouch to avoid making noise, avoid the camera after jumping over, and either avoid the guard or sneak up on him and knock him out (you'll get a score bonus for knocking out both guards). Climb the ladder, which leads to a platform with the zipline. There is a guard patrolling below, so it's best to wait for him to stop near the door, then use the zipline to knock him down and then stomp him. After opening the door the test will be completed. Go back to Parker for the results.

Reaching 100 points will make Parker offer a bonus challenge, or you can run the test again if you're not satisfied with your performance.

  1. Alan Parker - 1st dialogue
    • No Thanks - Leads to the second dialogue.
    • Run Course Again - Repeat Covert Ops orientation.
  2. Alan Parker - 2nd dialogue
    • Impatient
    • Confident
    • Curious
    • Recruit
    • -OR-
    • Veteran
If a score above 100 points was obtained, go to the next dialogue here, otherwise skip to the 3rd dialogue in the second conversation
  3. Alan Parker - 3rd dialogue
    • Irritated
    • Confident
    • Honest
  4. Alan Parker - 4th dialogue
    • No - Challenge declined.
    • Yes - Leads to 5th dialogue
  5. Alan Parker - 5th dialogue
    • Aggressive
    • Amused
    • Professional
    • Refuse - Challenge declined.

Alan Parker's Bonus Challenge

Retrieve Data

Sneak past security into the medical bay and recover the classified intelligence for Agent Parker.

Check your map and make sure to go through the correct door when taking this challenge, as the other door in the hall leads to Westridge and the end of the prologue. You will be stuck in dialogue and then shipped off to Saudi Arabia before you can reload.

Completing the assignment undetected will gain you a +1 reputation from Parker. Being seen by a camera or the guards will result in a -1 reputation loss. Neutralizing the guards will have no negative effect, as long as you remain unseen.

Enter the room that Parker unlocks for you. There are three guards: one downstairs, one upstairs and one in the medical bay. The side rooms on the ground floor both hold intel pickups: one unlocks Yancy Westridge's dossier, while the other Omar Mohammed bin Nasri's dossier. Grab the target intel from the medical bay, and don't forget the dossier on Alpha Protocol further back in the same room.

  • Dossier: Yancy Westridge
  • Dossier: Omar Mohammed bin Nasri
  • Dossier: Alpha Protocol
  • XP: +50
Return Data

Return the data from the medical bay to Agent Parker.

Exit the medical bay and go all the way back. Be careful, as a new guard will appear in the main hall. Take care of or sneak past the guard, and head back to Alan Parker.

You will then start a second conversation with Parker. The first reputation change will depend on whether you were seen or not.

Return to Interrogation Room

Return to the interrogation room to receive your mission briefing.

The next and final objective of this mission is to return to the interrogation room where the first conversation with Yancy Westridge was held. Here, it is possible to change the reputation with Westridge in a way that will result in the perks Antisocial or Social Butterfly (which require either -3 or +3 reputation with 3 people respectively), depending on your reputation with Mina Tang and Alan Parker (Sean Darcy can't be swayed either way until his mission in Saudi Arabia).

After that, the Operation Desert Spear begins, and you arrive at the Saudi Arabia Safehouse.

Results

After awakening in a medical facility surrounded by armed guards, Agent Thorton was put through a rigorous screening process. Agent Thorton was not notified of the test. After a brief introduction to the facility, Thorton was instructed to attend orientation on the use of gadgets, espionage and infiltration tactics, and in basic weapon use.

  • Bonus Objective: Mina Tang reports that Agent Thorton excelled on the weapon range, and has cleared him for field operations
  • Bonus Objective: Agent Thorton apparently ran the weapon course again after his score is calculated, and due to an unspecified weapon misfire on the range, Agent Darcy was hit and injured. While able to conduct orientation, Agent Darcy is still recovering.
  • Bonus Objective: Sean Darcy reports that Thorton is fully cleared for technical operations, and notes his use of gadgets on the course was...inventive.
  • Bonus Objective: There were apparently several injuries on the gadget range due to a miscommunication in training schedules. Several guards were slated to begin the course at the same time as Agent Thorton, and as a result, suffered various injuries while believing Thorton was part of the challenge. The agents are now recovering.
  • Bonus Objective: Alan Parker citied that Agent Thorton's score on the espionage course was one of the best in some time. While expressing some skepticism at Thorton lack of experiences, initial testing is proving promising.
  • Bonus Objective: Agent Thorton vanished for a short time during the espionage orientation. Thorton's whereabouts during this period is unknown, although Alan Parker claims that he noticed nothing out of the ordinary during the scheduled orientation run.

A psychiatric evaluation was given by Yancy Westridge. Agent Thorton meets the psychological profile required for tracking down the missing Halbech missiles and dispatching Sheik Ali-Shaheed.

Consequences in Following Missions

  • There are multiple opportunities here to change your reputation with the agency's characters, ranging from animosity (-6) to trust (+6).
    • Parker's reputation will alter some of his dialogue in the final mission, and it can be a deciding factor when trying to convince him to betray Alpha Protocol with "Analysis Flawed" option — but only if Thorton's favored dialogue stance is either Aggressive or Suave at that point. If you are aiming for one of these personality types, then you'll need to reach a reputation of at least +4 in Graybox to ensure that Parker listens to your arguments in the future. With Professional as favored dialogue stance, your reputation won't matter, even at -10, and he can always be convinced to switch sides and help Thorton.
    • For Westridge and Darcy, their reputation only slightly changes a few dialogue lines while in Saudi Arabia, and in the final mission, where you encounter both of them again, even their lines barely change at all. If you end up being on good terms with Darcy and Westridge, they would still fight you to the death and offer the same snarky and bitter comments.
    • Reputation with Mina plays a huge role throughout he game, as she's the default handler for the majority of the missions and has the most dialogue with Thorton. However, there will be plenty of ways to change it either way from -10 to +10 after Graybox.
  • If you wish to see a cutscene involving Alan Parker and Conrad Marburg at the end of the game during the Infiltrate Alpha Protocol mission, you must unlock at least 80% of Parker's dossier (4/5 entries), which requires collecting 2 of his dossiers in this mission. This can enable a special dialogue option "Deus Vult" when talking with Marburg which, when chosen, will reveal the connection Parker has to Marburg's earlier carrier. This will lead to him attacking Parker and fighting Thorton afterwards — which is one of 3 possible ways Marburg can be killed. Note, that for this to work, you'll also have to make certain choices to unlock another 2 entries of Parker's dossier, in addition to a few other requirements. See the Agent of Change and Dossier pages for details.

Perks

There are several perks you can potentially obtain in this mission.

As was mentioned earlier, Graybox is the best place to unlock Veteran- and Recruit-related perks (with 10 options for each), because there are no more Recruit dialogue options and only 3 Veteran options to be found throughout the rest of the game.

There are also multiple exploitable opportunities for gaining combat perks that are troublesome for a stealthy playstyle. Notable ones are Tough as Nails (take 1000 health damage to gain +5 Endurance) and Insurance Liability (take 5000 health damage to gain +10% Damage Resistance), which can be acquired by grinding Darcy's first test. The fastest way to do it is to use self-inflicted damage from Shock Traps to harm Thorton: face the wall, throw 3 Shock Traps at the floor, then walk into the wall (or you don't take damage otherwise, for some reason). Then finish the test and agree to run it again. With 150 health from Toughness + Iron Will, each attempt would result in 700-1000 health damage dealt, so Insurance Liability would only require 5-7 reruns.

Building a Deadlier Mouse Trap (+100 XP for getting 100 placed traps detonated) and Shock and Awe (+1 Shock Trap capacity for Incapacitating 50 enemies with Shock Traps) can also be unlocked in Darcy's first test.

Purposefully taking damage in the first part of the mission and healing with first aid stations will contribute towards Self-Made Medic (heal 2000 damage).

Each computer, lock, and alarm you successfully bypass in Parker's challenge will contribute towards their respective perks (Data Theft, Breaking and Entering, and Circuit Breaker — all worth +100 XP), even on repeated runs.
